DRUNK WEDNESDAY

Yes, it’s a thing – the night before Thanksgiving when those who are returning home meet at a bar with their not-seen-in-a-while friends. Sell a month-long schedule to a bar promoting itself as “the place where friends get together.” (2018)

 

GREAT TURKEY RACE

Listeners win a paper turkey with a number on it. On the day of the race, talent uses a leaf blower to “race” the turkeys down a hallway. Winner receives something Thanksgiving related. Great remote event. (2017)

 

THANKSGIVING BILLBOARD

Use a vehicle to sell one-hour van stops. Invite listeners to come by and write what they’re thankful for and sign their names on towable billboard that will be part of local Thanksgiving parade, be on display at HS rival football game, mall, etc. All listeners can register for grand prize (Thanksgiving dinner for 10, trip to next year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade in NYC, etc.). “WHAT I’M THANKFUL FOR THANKSGIVING” IMAGING

Invite listeners to email a ‘What I’m Thankful For” MP3 to the station (you could also designate one of your phone extensions as the “What I’m Thankful For Hotline”). Keep messages 20 seconds or less including their first name, town they’re from and what they’re thankful for. Post reminders that all submissions may be aired.  If you receive enough entries early enough, you could mix a two hour (more or less) show that incorporated listener audio and appropriate music and sell it as a special. Work with a non-profit to get as many volunteers as your frequency (or any other number you select) to help with any pre-holiday project the group is conducting). Have several major talent helping too along with special T-shirts (can be sponsored) with a message like, “I celebrated Thanks giving by helping others with Name of Charity and KXXX.”  A large sponsor may want to add their employees to your team – great! THE BEST THANKSGIVING EVER

Sell this to a supermarket that has discretionary community money. Give identical turkey dinner prizes to listeners and to a food bank in both the listener’s and the grocer’s names. Lots of good will. Boston Market might also be a potential sponsor. (Thanksgiving, 2011)

THANKSGIVING MUSIC FEAST/ALL THANKSGIVING FOR A DAY

At least as much imaging as anything else, pattern the day after what you might find at a typical Thanksgiving meal: Second helpings (double plays), old family favorites that haven’t made it to the table in a while, tasty new recipes, even the kids’ table (Scotty McCreery comes to mind). “WHAT I’M THANKFUL FOR THANKSGIVING”

Designate one of your phone extensions as the “What I’m Thankful For Hotline.” Prompt listeners to leave a brief message about what they’re thankful for. Be sure your recorded greeting instructs them to 1) limit their message to 30 seconds or less, include their first name and town they’re from, and what they’re thankful for. Remind them that all calls could be aired. You could also invite them to request a song but no promise that it will air with the message because of anticipated volume. Edit submissions and use them instead of voice tracks on Thanksgiving. Sell this as a 4-hour special (or longer) you should be able to get lots of calls if you start now. Sell remote to a farm store where the centerpiece of entertainment is a turkey race. Attendees are assigned a turkey to root for (number, color, etc.) with winners receiving free pumpkin pie/cake (cider, donuts, etc.).  (Thanksgiving, 2010)

Hide several clickable turkeys on your website in different locations each day. Listeners click on them to be registered to win grocery store gift certificate, new appliance, or whatever the prize is depending on your sponsor. TABLE THAT IDEA

Sell this to a furniture store, grocery store, kitchen store, etc. Deck out a nice dining room table and chairs with nice place settings, tablecloth, fake turkey and vegetables, etc. Listeners guess the value of everything on the table with closest guess winning. I’M HAVING THANKSGIVING AT GRANDMA’S HOUSE AND…

Sell this to a grocery store. Plays just like “I’m going on a picnic and I’m brining…” Listeners keep track of the items that Grandma’s serving. After the list has reached half a dozen or so items, the first caller that can name all the items wins the gift certificate. Multiple live mentions for sponsor. (Thanksgiving, 2009)

 ALL TIME BIGGEST TURKEYS

The Friday before Thanksgiving and then the next Monday and Tuesday, listeners submit votes/vote online for the worst songs ever. Play snippets as part of sharing the updates. Reveal “winning” songs Wednesday morning. Be sure to contact TV and paper for coverage. (Thanksgiving, 2009)

 WE’LL MAKE THE DONATION FOR YOU

Times are tough, so rather than asking listeners for donations, we ask them to stop by participating sponsors’ locations. For every person through the door who says that WXXX sent them, those businesses will donate $1 (up to a pre-determined maximum) to a local food bank or soup kitchen.

THERE’S ICE IN THIS TURKEY!

In the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving, qualify 10 listeners to win a nice diamond ring (the “ice”). The only catch is that the ring is placed inside a turkey that is then frozen solid. All 10 turkeys have something cool inside of them, but only one has the ring. The contestants have to get into their turkey to find out what they won (plus they get to keep the turkey). Variation: stuff the turkeys with cold, hard cash. All the turkeys have some money in them, but only one has the jackpot. (Make sure you put the money in something safe to protect it from being torn apart.) Great potential for TV exposure!

The day before Thanksgiving, one member of the morning show speaks only in Olde English phrases and accent.

THANKSGIVING GAS

The weekend before Thanksgiving, give away free gas so listeners can drive to grandma’s house for Thanksgiving.

FEED OTHERS, FEED YOURSELF

For three days the week before Thanksgiving, invite workplaces to pledge money to be given to local food banks or other charities. The workplace that pledges the most receives a fully-catered pre-Thanksgiving meal from a restaurant, grocery store, etc. Have multiple workplace categories: 5 or fewer employees, 6-12, etc. Keep updating totals hourly. You can also just take straight donations during this time, too.

THANKS FOR GIVING

Arrange this with a restaurant or supermarket that sells in-store cooked meals. Chef makes familiar as well as unusual holiday recipes. For a donation, listeners receive small samples and the recipes. All monies go to a food bank or charities.

PASS IT ON

Listeners compete to win groceries not for themselves but for the food bank of their choice.

THANKGIVING DAY PARADE

If you have a Macy’s in your area, sell them on a promotion where two listeners are sent to New York to see the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and take in the Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall.

TURKEY-FREE THANKSGIVING

Post meat-free recipes from Vegetarian Awareness Network 800-USA-VEGE, local chefs, listeners, etc. Sell two-week sponsorship to vegetarian restaurant, green grocer, etc. where recipes can be given on-air, posted on website and picked up at the client’s location. Consider a remote with local chef on hand to demonstrate recipes and offer tasting.

Hold club night at upscale club or hotel with the price of admission waived for listeners who bring cans of food that will be donated to local food shelter.

Jock agrees to spend the weekend living at and broadcasting from a large grocery store, consuming only liquids while raising money to buy groceries for an area food bank.

Prior to Thanksgiving, invite listeners to call, e-mail, fax those things for which they are thankful this year. Air them Thanksgiving week and post them on your website.

GIVE AWAY PEOPLE FOR TURKEYS INSTEAD OF TURKEYS FOR PEOPLE

Enlist volunteers to serve in various community organizations that feed needy folks by helping to deliver food to shut-ins, work in rescue/soup kitchen, entertain seniors in nursing homes, etc.

DRUMSTICK AUCTION

Starting on Thanksgiving morning and lasting through out the day, auction off drumsticks from some of country music’s most famous drummers. Donate all the money to local charity.

CELEBRITY WAITERS

Two ways to go on this. 1) Staffers volunteer to work at various soup kitchens in the area either serving or preparing Thanksgiving meals for homeless. Interview heads of these kitchens and let them talk about whom they feed and what their needs are. Also invite local officials, celebrities to join in, either as cooks/servers or in making cash/food donations direct to assistance centers. Do live cut-ins on Thanksgiving Day. 2) Have staffers work one day as waiters or buspersons at local restaurants, donating their tips to a local charity. Turn into a remote where listeners can also just make a donation.

STUFF THIS!

Listeners are challenged to fill a bus (truck, HUMVEE, etc.) with clothing, non-perishable food, toys to donate to local charitable organization. Good for Thanksgiving or Christmas.

“CANNED” FILM FESTIVAL

Team with local theater and/or grocer who’ll agree to let listeners see a movie for free in exchange for several canned food items that will be donated to local food bank.

TURKEY BOWLING

Tie in with retailer who’ll let you “bowl” a frozen turkey into real bowling pins (or two-liter plastic bottles). Portion of the day’s sales goes to local food bank/rescue mission; donations also welcome. A grocery store is a good partner as they have aisles ideal for an “alley” plus they have food to donate and can generate good press for themselves. They can also run special pricing promotions during remote. Alternatively, sell a remote at a food store and offer a free turkey for anyone who uses his or her turkey to bowl a “turkey” (three strikes in a row).

VEGETARIAN THANKSGIVING

Listeners call/e-mail their recipes for non-meat meals to morning show. Morning show picks best recipes and jocks try them out. Winners get certificates to health food stores, vegetarian restaurants, etc. Winning recipes will be posted on station website. Also works with no prizes, just as a fun, informative bit. Post on your website and sell to business associated vegetarian-associated businesses.

LISTEN FOR LUNCH

From Monday to Wednesday before Thanksgiving, the workplace that listens to your morning show and pledges the most for the charity you chose wins a catered turkey buffet for lunch, delivered to their office on that day. Daily pledging runs from 7- 10am with frequent bid updates. Do a cutaway on the midday show from the winning workplace.

“TANKS-GIVING”

The day before Thanksgiving, before listeners drive out of town to visit relatives, pump gas at a local station selling gas for the same price as your frequency.

FOOTBALL WIDOWS THANKSGIVING

Football widow on Thanksgiving Night (or New Year’s Day)? Station hosts night out at local country dance club with jocks and dance instructors on hand to teach new dances (male partners not necessary). Option: tie in a beer/athletic wear company and also teach ladies basic football rules and strategy; give away trip for two to upcoming professional or bowl game.

THE PARTY’S ON US

Give away tickets to Thanksgiving football game with after-the-game catered Thanksgiving dinner with housekeeper to clean up afterwards as the grand prize. Multiple sponsor tie-ins. Works for Thanksgiving, New Year’s or Super Bowl Sunday. 

NO MORE LEFTOVERS!

By Monday, listeners who are sick of turkey can win ethnic meals…Thai, Chinese, Indian, Italian, Greek, etc. Also makes a good concept for a spot for sales.

THANKSGIVING LEFTOVERS

The day/weekend after Thanksgiving, “empty out” the prize closet giving away “leftover” copies of CDs, cassettes, T-shirts, etc.

TURKEY OF THE DAY

Give away a turkey each day of the month through Thanksgiving. Qualify turkey winners for grand prizes including a personal chef that comes to your house to prepare the meal, new kitchenware, set of expensive, new holiday dishes, major/minor appliances, new dining room furniture, etc. Good register/listen-to-win opportunity.

WING IT

Listeners are played part of a well-known song. When the music stops, they must sing the next line. Successful players get two turkey wings and, if they can name the station’s call letters, they get the rest of the bird, too.

THE TURKEY VS. THE TRACTOR-TRAILER

Old but still fun. Listeners win a turkey by coaxing one turkey across your on-air “highway” before it gets run over. As everyone knows, the best way to achieve this is with a turkey call, and that the faster the gobble, the faster the turkey crosses. Have plenty of tire squeals, car sounds, 18-wheeler horns for the best staging. Consolation prize if your turkey doesn’t make it: one pound of ground turkey.

CHECK OUT THIS STUFFING!

“Stuffed” turkeys are given away to the correct caller. Listeners reach into their thawed turkey to see what it’s stuffed with (concert tickets, CDs, cash in the amount of the frequency, food store gift certificates, a ham, etc.). Be sure to have (tasteful) “sucking” sound effects as listeners pull out their prizes.

 

 

IDEAS FOR THE WEEK OF THANKSGIVING

Listeners call the Thanksgiving Hot Line to leave a message about something they are thankful for. Play these back during the week on the morning show and/or make imaging out of them that runs across all dayparts

Quick poll ideas: pumpkin or mincemeat pies, best part of Thanksgiving dinner, hot turkey sandwich or turkey on white toast with may and cranberry sauce. These could also be turned into imaging (ask for contact email).

Hold a ‘Gobble-off” – an on-air competition for the best turkey call to win a free turkey the sales department has brought in.

“Turkey Dynasty” – listen for the turkey call to win sales department’s turkey.

Under the banner of “A (Yourtown) Thanksgiving,” have listeners share special family recipes, traditions, ways they spend the holidays each year; shoot for :30 vignettes once per hour. Post recipes on your website and sell the page to an institutional advertiser.

Soup’s On: Interview head of soup kitchen, rescue mission, etc. asking especially what their needs are and allowing listeners ample time to help out. Station could also make contribution.

Station personalities valet park cars at malls for one dollar, which is donated to local charity. Start on the first day of the Christmas shopping season – the day after Thanksgiving – and continue at different location each Saturday through the weekend before Christmas. RESERVED PARKING FOR KXXX LISTENERS

The day after Thanksgiving, work with area malls to section off several hundred spaces near the front. Sell BBQ restaurant on supplying prizes for morning show college football bowl game contest. Listeners go online to pick winners; station draws from all correct entries for pork BBQ sandwich catering platter plus bags of pork rinds.

BIG GAME HUNTER

Hide deer images throughout your website, changing their location each day. “Hunters” click on the deer with each click being an entry to win big gift certificate from hunting store, free accommodations at a hunting lodge, etc.

WEAPONS OF MASS DISTRACTION

At the cue, listeners call to be registered to win large gift certificate from outdoor store. (contest name courtesy WKLS) 

SNOVEMBER

Sell this to a ski shop, ski resort and other related sponsors. Give away tickets to local ski lift; all who win are qualified for complete ski outfit from ski shop, deluxe trip with lodging at ski resort and other prizes from sponsors.

FANTASY WEEKENDS

Give away items that listeners want but few would buy: hard-to-get tickets to a pro football or other sports game, every CD the station has added this past year (great for the week between Christmas and New Years), state-of-the-art cell phone and service, fly-away to see big artist, etc.
